Overview Winterization and fractionation are used when an edible oil must stay perfectly clear in cold conditions. Oils such as cottonseed, sunflower and rice bran contain high melting point waxes and saturated triglycerides that crystallise at low temperature and make the oil look cloudy, which is unacceptable for salad oil and for export markets with cold climates.
