Why Sunflower Needs Careful Pretreatment

Sunflower seed has a high oil content and a hard hull. Good dehulling and flaking make pressing and extraction far more efficient.

• Dehulling: remove hulls to cut fibre and improve oil quality.
• Flaking: pressing seed into thin, uniform flakes with a flaking machine helps release oil.
• Conditioning: adjusting moisture and temperature with softening and heating keeps flakes intact.

Pressing or Extraction?

Small and medium mills usually press sunflower seed mechanically. Larger mills add solvent extraction to recover oil from the press cake:

1. Pressing — mechanical expelling after pretreatment.
2. Extraction — a continuous solvent extraction machine recovers residual oil from cake, lowering losses.
3. Puffing/expanding — a puffing machine can improve extraction efficiency for high-oil seeds.
